In aerospace applications
Magnesium alloy is the lightest metal structural material used in the manufacturing industry of aircraft, spacecraft, and rocket missiles. Magnesium is lighter in weight than aluminum, with a specific gravity of 1.8 and lower strength, only 200-300 megapascals (20-30 kilograms per square millimeter), and is mainly used to manufacture low load-bearing parts.

Magnesium alloys are prone to oxidation and corrosion in humid air, so the surface of the parts needs to be chemically treated or painted before use. Germany was the first to produce and use magnesium alloys containing aluminum on airplanes. Magnesium alloy has high anti vibration ability, can absorb a large amount of energy under impact load, and has good heat absorption performance, making it an ideal material for manufacturing aircraft wheels. Magnesium alloy is very stable in gasoline, kerosene, and lubricants, suitable for manufacturing engine gearboxes, oil pumps, and oil pipes. It is also used to manufacture moving parts such as rocker arms, flaps, cabin doors, and control surfaces due to the small inertial forces generated during rotation and reciprocating motion. Magnesium alloy products are widely used in civilian and military aircraft, especially bombers. For example, the fuselage of the B-52 bomber uses 635 kilograms of magnesium alloy sheets, 90 kilograms of extruded parts, and over 200 kilograms of castings. Magnesium alloy is also used in some components of missiles and satellites, such as the instrument compartment, tail compartment, and engine mounts of China's "Red Flag" surface to air missile. China has abundant rare earth resources and developed yttrium magnesium alloy in the 1970s to improve its performance

With room temperature strength, it can be used for a long time at 300 ° C and has been widely promoted and applied in the aerospace industry.
Application in automobiles
(1) Shell type. Such as clutch housing, valve cover, instrument panel, gearbox, crankcase, engine front cover, cylinder head, air conditioning unit housing, etc.
(2) Bracket type. Such as steering wheel, steering bracket, brake bracket, seat frame, mirror bracket, distribution bracket, etc.
According to relevant research, 60% of the fuel used in cars is consumed by the weight of the car. For every 10% reduction in the weight of the car, its fuel efficiency can be improved by more than 5%; For every 100 kg reduction in car weight, fuel consumption can be reduced by about 0.7 L per 100 kilometers, and for every 1 L of fuel saved, CO2 emissions can be reduced by 2.5 g, resulting in an annual emission reduction of over 30%. So reducing the weight of cars has a significant impact on the environment and energy, and lightweighting cars has become an inevitable trend.
Application on digital SLR cameras
Magnesium alloy, due to its low density and high strength, has certain anti-corrosion properties and is commonly used as the skeleton of DSLR cameras. Generally, high-end and professional digital SLR cameras use magnesium alloy as the frame to make them sturdy, durable, and have a good hand feel.
The digital SLR camera with a magnesium alloy body is not only a symbol of quasi professional level expertise, but also comes at a high price.
According to the forming method, it can be divided into two categories: deformed magnesium alloys and cast magnesium alloys.
Other apps
The size of LCD screens on mobile phones and laptops is increasing year by year, and magnesium alloy is used on their support frames and back shells.
Although the thermal conductivity of magnesium alloy is lower than that of aluminum alloy, it is tens of times higher than that of plastic. Therefore, when magnesium alloy is used in electrical products, it can effectively dissipate internal heat to the outside.
Use magnesium alloy on the casing and heat dissipation components of computers and projectors that generate high temperatures internally. The use of magnesium alloy on the casing of the television can achieve no heat dissipation holes.
Electromagnetic wave shielding performance: The electromagnetic wave shielding performance of magnesium alloy is better than that of electroplating shielding film on plastic. Therefore, using magnesium alloy can eliminate the electroplating process of electromagnetic wave shielding film.
Use magnesium alloy on components near vibration sources such as the reading device of hard disk drives. If magnesium alloy is used on the fan blades, it can reduce vibration and achieve low frequency. In addition, magnesium alloy is used on the steering wheel and seats to improve impact absorption and lightweighting after the car is hit.
